Little Thrones

"..It was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort." J.R.R. Tolkien
It's J.R.R.'s birthday today, but I didn't know that until I started looking around for quotes about cozy chairs. I have been browsing around the Internet, trying to find "the perfect chair" and I can't find one I like which hints to me that I have weird taste and I'm WAY out of it. Oh well. I did find a fantastic chair at MacKenzie-Childs but the beautiful things there are out of my price range. We are storing Kelli's huge chairs while they try to sell their sweet cottage and it's made me realize we need new chairs. Every morning when Bill is home, we sit at the window and talk about life, people, Jesus, and we pray. We've been using Kelli's chairs but they are much too big for our house and our old, green wing chairs have ratty slipcovers and only cost $100 at a cheap furniture store to begin with. But, the cheap green chairs have become a part of our favorite time of day. We're quite addicted to sitting at the window, watching the day arrive. We get up at 4:30 almost every day, so we definitely watch the light roll in. Even though it isn't cost effective to reupholster chairs, I think it is the best plan. Eternal words have been spoken in these chairs, communion and coffee have blessed us. While the chairs are at the upholsterer getting their new dresses, we'll move the sofa over, face the window and continue our coffee chats. Bill likes this plan.

I had two old cricket chairs in my classroom for a while. I fluffed them up with old pillows and the students LOVED sitting in them. Eighth graders are big and the chairs withstood too much wear and tear. One fell apart and one is here now, painted white and a little rickety. Even though we had four babies, I've never had a good rocker. The best rocker was the one in our modern living room in my childhood home. It was a hand-me-down from my grandparents' attic. My mother had it refinished. It was perfect. I spent so much time rocking in that chair. I liked to listen to music and soothe myself when I was ready too early, or up too early, or feeling a tiny bit upset about something. I think my brother has it now. I like swivel rockers but they don't look like something Father Bear, Mother Bear, or Baby Bear would choose, so they don't meet the Cozy in the Woods criteria. What is your favorite chair? Can you tell me about it?

I like these chairs found on the blog listed above. They are from a doll house. So, I am reminded that I want to live in a bear's house or a doll's house. Actually, I want to live in MY house and I am feeling a little fuzzy headed because we WILL get up early tomorrow, but we'll have to rush around and I'll take Bill and Jeff to the airport and then I'll go to school and my vacation will be over. Tomorrow I'll be looking at sleepy students all day and then I'll come home and see what the quiet does for me. Why don't you come over and sit in a chair with me? I'll bring you a pretty mug of coffee or tea and we'll sit knee-to-knee and talk. I'll make sure you are warm enough, that your cup is full, and I'll ask you lots of questions because I'm very curious. I'll listen hard to your answers. It would be much nicer than meeting at a coffee shop. One of my best friend's mother met HER best friend for a Pepsi EVERY weekday morning, as long as they lived in the same town. EVERY Monday through Friday, without fail and they didn't like coffee or tea so they shared a Pepsi together instead. I love that. I wish you a friend like that. Bye bye.

My favorite chair just went out for the garbage last week :o(. I liked it because it was old and ratty and you could curl up in it. It was in sad shape though, so it was time to let go and move on.

I had an inexpensive rocking chair with the first two babies, but not with the last two. I missed it. We definitely need a new one before our Little One arrives.

I like it that you're having your chairs reupholstered. Can you imagine if those chairs could talk? The storied they would have to tell, of love and faithfulness?

I will be praying for you, Bill, and Jeff -- for safe travels and a good first week back at school.

Blessings, dear Pom Pom!

I'd love to come over for that coffee with you :)
I'm dreaming about getting new chairs, especially i'd love to have a rocking chair. Never had one not even in my childhood, but my neighbours back then had one and i could sit on it when we went visiting. I guess i will have to wait some more, but when i'll finally have mine, oh i'm pretty sure i'll enjoy it to the fullest !
I wish you a good and blessed week my dear friend !

I had a little loveseat of my grandmother's that I adored, but it finally fell apart. No way to fix it back. So I've been looking and looking, too. One of these days I'll find the perfect loveseat to take its place. I love armchairs, but I want a loveseat so my cat can sit right beside me while I write or read.

What a cozy post this is ~ I feel as if I have actually been in your house with you, having a cozy-in-the-woods conversation! xo Kari

I love that you will be recovering your chairs. The best part of that is that you can choose fabric you really like. The youth group at our church has a sale every summer to support their trip to camp. This past summer I bought a soft blueish gray recliner that I love to sit in. It isn't perfect but it'll do for now.

I hope you have a blessed day as you get back into your routine this Monday morning.

I love the rocking chair I built by myself from a kit - it was a 21st birthday gift back in 1976. I sat and hemmed wedding clothes in it, I sat and nursed my babies in it, I sat and rocked and wept in it when parents died, I sit in it now and read or knit or just ponder on the goodness of God.
My beloved has just been given a beautiful leather IKEA 'Poang' chair by our daughters - and I love to see him resting in it after a hard day's preaching/pastoral work/whatever.
Your post has given me lots of great thoughts - thanks PP!!

This is a fun and interesting post. I too have my favourite chair for sitting reading and drinking tea etc and it looks out into my garden.

But 4.30 am! I have to ask what time do you go to bed? That is the middle of the night to me.

I have a rocker that I love to sit in. I wrap a kitschy afghan around me as I read sometimes. My grandgirl loves it.

I was just thinking of looking for a cozy, perfect chair too. I'm going to browse the links you shared.

I have two leather couches that I'm going to have restuffed (or whatever it is they do). I can't part with them or the worn leather on them.

We rearranged the furniture in our living room over Christmas, and a chair I had pretty much ignored--a leather club chair--has suddenly become my favorite chair to knit in. How funny to discover it after all these years.

Happy New Year, Pom Pom. Thanks again so much for the book!

You're right, the chairs will have to stay! Recovering is a great idea. I don't have a favourite chair but I love my couch. I sit there every morning with my coffee and watch the light on the mountains, the clouds, and the small birds and animals coming and going. I want to keep it forever. I love that you are curious and listen hard to people's answers. You are a blessing, and I love knowing you x
