APIL : Good Foods

In the February issue of Christianity Today I read Frederica Mathewes-Green's thoughts on Lent. She says, "Lenten disciplines train us like athletes, strengthening our earthly bodies and souls, healing the body of believers in our local parish and forging union with the body of Christ throughout time." She also said a few words about abstaining from certain foods. Tonight we went to a Thai restaurant and I had a nice square plate full of chicken, rice, onions, peppers, and celery. The vegetables tasted so good to me. I'm not usually as crazy about vegetables as I am about chocolate bunnies. Gulp. Good fresh fruits and vegetables do possess earthly tastes that are beyond description. I think it might be true that we are what we eat. I spent six hours in the almost empty school today getting ready for six days of substitutes and when I got home Jeff had eaten my Dove bunny. My bunnies eaten count may not grow much. Just saying. Why do we indulge in processed food when we can taste the earth?

The basket above was a gift from some friends who lived in Malawi for a short time. Bill met up with them in Ethiopia and they gave him this treasure to bring home to me. He said they carried this type of basket around like a purse. They might put some lunch inside, a pocket book, a cell phone. I love to cradle it in my arm. I have used it to take my lunch to school once or twice but it seems too dear for that. Maybe if I took it more often, filled with earth foods, I'd eat in a cleaner manner. Hmmmmmmm.

I leave you with a bird. Last spring, I took this picture with my tiny camera and I do not know what made it look like a silhouette with a spotty rainbow background but today, it can be a symbol of expectancy. There are just three short weeks until the happy Sunday. What are your plans for April 4th?

I love this, my body is a temple stuff ins't it! as we get older we become more and more aware that our body is the vehicle of the soul and needs great care. When we are unwell we always nurture our bodies, when we eat fruit and veg we always feel good, don't we, putting in healthy fresh nourishment. My body is indeed a temple and I will use i to worship God!

Wow, so much to think about! I love your phrase 'taste the earth'. It ties in with my 'going Green' Lent post, and I need to think more about what you've said. For another symbol of hope, like your bird, I think you'd love the post today at Apron Seniorita, which you'll find on my Pause in Lent blog list. It's a lovely idea.

Hi Pom Pom! Your post is making me hungry! I adore strawberries. I think I like the look of them as much as the taste! I guess that's why they're such a popular theme in arts and crafts. Your bird photo is terrific. He almost looks like he's waiting for something important to happen! Have a wonderful week! Hugs, Terri

I have been more serious about Lent this year than ever before. I have not been 100% an dI feel bad but I do think about things differently and feel I have gotten some good out of it so I hope breaking my promise hasn't been too bad! I love the food and how we should be better to our bodies. I have been trying! I really enjoyed this post!
Hugs, Lisa

I too love this post especially eating from the earth. We've changed our eating habits and seldom purchase processed foods anymore. We feel a whole lot better. Hugs

I think I read that same Frederica Matthewes-Green quote. I like the idea of fasting as a community. There is a connectedness that about it that is appealing to me. I think she also said something like "people want transformation but they don't want change." That has stuck with me because I am guilty as charged.

Your bag is beautiful.

I wonder what you will be eating in Australia???

(Your comment on my blog about the yogurt quote made me laugh out loud. I love your sense of humor. Thanks for making me smile.)

Hi Pom Pom ~

Happy Sunday to you! Your blog is such a cheery place to visit. The real foods look so yummy! The basket looks like something to take to the market and fill up with all sorts of yummy fruits and vegetables.

Sweet blessings,

Hello, my friend! How I loved looking at your beautiful images of God's natural foods! I am trying to work on my diet, but I have a long way to go before I consider myself a healthy eater. :)

I love your little bird picture! It's amazing! You can just see her eye glowing against her dark feathers.

As always, thank you for sharing your heart and cheering me up. You have such a gift for doing that!

Blessings and love,

Andrea

P.S. We are not back in our house yet. The painters are working on it now, so it should not be much longer.

If you are what you eat, then is our own Pom Pom a chocolate bunny? Sweet!

I always feel so much better when I focus more on the earthy foods of fruits/veg than other things.

I simply adore the bird photo at the last. It looks like a robin. If I were you, I would enlarge it and frame it for the wall. It's lovely and artsy.

Your photo of the bird looks like a painting. I love the bright little eye.

I bought a cookbook this week. It's the sister book to one I already have. They're filled with eat clean recipes. Like you I need to eat more fruits and veggies, but I sure do love chocolate too, although no bunnies have been eaten here (yet :o)).

Blessings!

Hi Pom Pom. Very thoughtful post today and I am total agreement. There are a few foods that I am sensitive or actually allergic to. I avoid almost all processed foods, including sugar, wheat and soy. I do like certain sweets, but my body feels so much better when I stick to whole foods with lots of vegetables. I love your bird pic. Beautiful. Spring is almost here. Ahh....

Thank you for visiting us. Who is your friend who lives near us? Maybe we know her.

Have a wonderful week.

Hi Pom! I agree with Gumbo Lilly, you're definitely a sweet little chocolate bunny! Much cuter that an old carrot or something ;).
And that bird photo is just wonderful -- looks more like a painting than a photo -- love it!
Happy Spring Break to you!
Blessings,
G

Okay, I HAVE to have a print of your bird photo. It's great! An 8x10 will be fine. I'll pay whatever you ask, within reason of course! It's really amazing and would make me so happy to look at it every day. I'm serious. If you're agreeable, I'll send my address.

Have a great time in Aussie land. I'll be praying for your safety. Look forward to when you get back! Let me know about the birdie photo, please?
