Jenny learned to crochet! Isn't this octopus adorable?
Hello to you! November is almost over and tomorrow is Bill's birthday! It's a big birthday so I am excited to celebrate him! The only sad thing is that he is not a fan of birthday cake. Boo. I never did get around to making myself a birthday cake, so I would like to partake of cake on HIS birthday, but I may have to settle for a restaurant dessert.I have been knitting for my niece's baby and my brother (shawl and hat for baby, socks for the grandpa). I am not a speedy knitter, I guess. It seems to take FOREVER for me to finish projects, even small ones.
Oh! Do you like my new flannel sheets? I like cartoon-y prints on my bedding. I have been thinking about decorating for Christmas but I shall wait until after Thanksgiving. I bought the turkey but that is all I have done to prepare. I wish I could go real slow and savor all the preparations. I wish I could take my time creating appetizers and pie, but somehow I feel a bit rushy when it comes to preparing the meal. I am praying for successful gravy.
I decided not to overdo when it comes to Advent books, because for quite a few years I have purchased new books and guides and then not been that attracted to them. Weird. I'm going to switch things up this year. (I just paused for a minute and turned on Andy Williams Christmas!) I really am going to try to think of very creative fun. One thing we'll do is go to the chapel and sing with my Bible study friends. I will go to see my Plum Cake in Nutcracker. I am going to a candlelight dinner with Jenny and a fun Christmas tea with Kelli. Maybe I'll pack a lunch and go for a holiday walk, partaking in hot chocolate and a peanut butter sandwich.
I've been making bread with my bread machine. It's been kind of dry but I toast it. Have you heard of the wheat grinders that people are buying? Do you want to grind your own wheat? I don't think we eat enough bread to justify a wheat grinder.
Are there any friendly places you like to frequent in your city or town? The library? A coffee shop? A neighbor's home? Your church? I like all of the clerks at the grocery store but sometimes they seem weary even though they are always pleasant. Maybe I will put a stash of small goodies in my bag and give little gifts to them each time I shop.
In my reading group we are going to read a book about Saint Nicholas for our December meeting. I might buy my book clubbers chocolate Santas.
Have you heard of the Examen? It's an Ignatian prayer where you practice self reflection in God's presence. It can be as simple as asking yourself what you are most thankful for at the end of the day and what you are not particularly thankful for. It's nice to light a candle while you reflect. I certainly am reminded of God's good faithfulness when I practice this.
In what way are you going to add a thing or two to your Christmas decor? I ordered a reindeer print quilt to use as a tablecloth, some ruffled gingham (green) shams for the sofa, and two pink Christmas print throws to hang as curtains in my hobbit hole. I'll take a photo when they come. I did buy a little gingerbread doll from Target quite a few weeks ago. I'll show you where I decide to place her.
Today I was dreaming of fixing up a good napping spot in the guest room. It's right here by my hobbit hole and sometimes when I can't settle on what to do next, I think I am tired and in need a short nap, so it would be fun to have a furry little nest on the guest room bed. I'm planning it. Timothy would probably adopt it but we can share.
I hope you are doing well. What's on your mind today? What kind of holiday plans instill hope in your sweet heart?
Well, thank you for popping by and saying hello! (BIG HUG!)

Oh, my, Pom Pom, so many ideas and plans and already accomplished Christmas Things. Reading about it all, I immediately feel like taking a nap in your proposed spot in the guest room, maybe with Timothy. Right now I feel like sleeping as much as a cat does. I may be going into hibernation...
So so busy... Try adding just a little extra water when you use the breadmaker. Another tip I had this week - if you boil potatoes, save the cooking water and use that as the liquid when breadmaking. That is supposed to improve the texture.
Well! So many questions! :) We have kids and grandkids coming for a week at Thanksgiving, so I am already decorating for Christmas a bit, for those grands. This year I'm enjoying it -- I seem to have some of my holiday spirit back, which has been missing for several years. Yesterday I made a garland with dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and dried cranberries. It's pretty! For Christmas itself, we will have one child here, but no grands, so a quiet time.
I enjoy going to a local pottery shop, a nursery, the thrift store, and of course our church. We have lots of decorating to do there.
Good morning Pom Pom. How nice to see your blog post pop up. You have a lot of thoughts going and projects to complete. Our big project is done. We re-decorated one of our spare rooms changing out a queen for a king with a firm mattress for our son-in-laws comfort. Thanksgiving is late this year which means Christmas decorating will start in earnest on Friday next. We'll take advantage of our sons and son-in-laws help to haul in the Christmas tree and bring the boxes down from storage. Hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving and that you find joy joy joy in all your preparations for Christmas!
I like your cozy winter sheets! I use my breadmaker to make the dough then I form the loaves and bake them in the oven. We didn't care for the bread done completely in the breadmaker.
I'm not getting into the Christmas spirit as early as I normally do. I have Christmas music playing and hopefully that will help.
I will go and look up about the Examen and maybe use it for my meditations in Advent. Thank you for recommending it.
That octopus is very impressive for a beginner! Christmas feels different for me this year. I've had invites but it means travelling, then there's Mother to consider because my two sisters are busy with their own families. The young girls are going to New York with their parents just before Xmas so instead of gifting presents, I thought I'd donate to their holiday fund so no long Amazon wish lists to fulfil this year!My ex boss doesn't need me to put up her Xmas decs this year either!Kinda feel like I've been out out to pasture!Love all your preps and special Happy Birthday to your beloved. X
Your knitting & Jennys crochet are just adorable dear Pom Pom. Every year my friends & I go over to a small township nearby & they decorate the hall with a different theme each Christmas. Its only open for a couple of weeks, they have a small shop there selling handmade items & Christmas carols are sung at different times by the church choir. This will be the 6th or 7th year we have been & its become a lovely tradition. We buy from the shop & try to really support them in any way, even donating some of our craft items to them. Then we go to a wonderful Garden Centre nearby that has a lovely cafe & we have lunch & often buy plants (I do!!). It kind of welcomes in the festive season for us. Its lovely to see your post dear Pom Pom xx
I like your winter sheets and I do like that octopus - yes it is adorable.
Early good wishes for Thanksgiving.
All the best Jan
Lots of thoughts and ideas going on with you!
I would say my whole town is friendly and so is my church (not in town).
I don't do any Christmas decorations until after Thanksgiving.
Not buying anything new. Already have enough!! :)
Hey Pom Pom. Your posts always make me happy so I'm glad to see a post from you. Jenny must have taken after you. The octopus is adorable. I want to start decorating for Christmas right after Thanksgiving. Dan ordered me another Santa poster for my big old frame on the front porch. A wind storm tore up the one I had year before last. Have a nice Thanksgiving. :)
I forgot to say I love your flannel sheets! I have it on my list to get another set of flannels soon -- I hadn't thought of anything as cute as those, until now! Thanks!
Hi! haven't visited for a while, I like the Examen thing, I will do it. I started decorating for Christmas early this year as I want to love my house and give it the best. I have some fake greenery up on the staircase and I have two fake trees - but I am only putting the lights on - we are having a few days away so I thought my son and his girlfriend would like to stay over, have the house to themselves (they live with her family) and they can decorate the trees together, which I know will enjoy. I bought Christmas themed bed covers this year for the first time ever,I will put them on just before Christmas when both my sons stay for a night or two. Like you, I have a short nap these days in the afternoon, it makes all the difference. Lovely to see your plans. Betty x
