Fairy Talk

Children, Children Don't Forget
by Dora Owen

Children, children don't forget
There are elves and fairies yet.

Where the knotty hawthorn grows
Look for prints of fairy toes.
Where the grassy rings are green
Moonlight dances shall be seen.
Watch and wait: O lucky you,
If you find a fairy shoe:
For a ransom he will pay
Hobbling barefoot all the day.
Lay it on his mushroom seat
Wish your wish and go your way
If your wish should be discreet,
Never fear for he will pay.

Of course the fairies won't let me take their photographs.

I visited an antique barn with a friend yesterday and we meandered through the different stalls.  We didn't buy antiques (I hardly ever do) but I found two felted toadstools.  Don't they fit right in?
The same stall had lots of fairy furniture, twigs and metal.  I couldn't resist this little dining arrangement.  When I get the wild spinach pulled from the chimney garden, I might place it in the garden.  Meanwhile, why don't you pull up a chair?  I'll open the cake tin and find a lemon fairy cake for you.  Do you like cream and sugar in your tea?
My friend asked me, "Do you have a fairy for that table and chairs."  I said, "We don't SEE the fairies, Dawn."  The "fairies" in the garden stores don't look like real fairies.  Lisbeth Zwerger knows what fairies look like.
I think fairies are earthy, not sparkly.  They live down packed dirt tunnels and they hang their clothes on twig pegs.  They sleep in nutshell beds and use thistle down to stuff their mattresses.
That's why girls like sleeping outside on summer nights.  The fairies play their flutes and whistle poems into slumbering ears.  When they snuff out their campfires and scamper down their tunnels, outdoor sleepers can still smell the sharp essence of moon glow.  You've smelled it, haven't you?
Maria Sangiolo sings lovely fairy songs.  "The Fairy's Wash Day" is my favorite.
If you can't sleep outside, you can sleep by the window.  I think the Fairy Moon will shine on you.

Ah yes, I think you know fairies well Pompom and that your new fairy furniture will be appreciated. I think animals see fairies, I am sure Ambercat sees them. I enjoyed your post today.

In my old book from my childhood, the pictures in that book of Thumbalina look just what I always thought fairy's would look like. I love your little table and chairs. Your mushrooms that you picked up are lovely too.
I think it is too hot right now for fairy's to be out until late at night around here. I haven't seen anything of them, not even in the garden. I will keep a look out for fairy shoes now.
I have been thinking about Heidi lately and going for a visit with her. :)I thought I would like to crawl up in her hay mow and take a nap.

Yes, please! I'll take cream and sugar, and definitely a fairy cake. Now Pom. If I were there, I'd shake my finger at you. Read that paragraph above, in which you describe the fairies. YOU HAVE A BOOK IN YOU, ABOUT FAIRIES. You need to write it. Even if it's only a short children's book. You already see and feel the setting, don't you? Then ask yourself, "What has happened there, one day last week?" You will come up with something fun, and that is your plot. Please! You can't give me that description and not give me a story too!! :)

I agree with you about the earthiness of fairies. I think some renditions I see are two "Disneyesque" and cutesy. I love your description of how they live. I'm with M.K. on the story idea! The fairy dining set is ADORABLE!
I'm feeling like drawing fairies or mushrooms or something like that...but it's late so I'd better go to bed. Work tomorrow!
Thanks for the fun post!

Hello grandmotherly Pom! I am so glad that I didn't have a mouth full of tea when I read your last post because It made me burst out laughing & then there would have been a mess! Mmm upcycling doesn't always mean that it works out well I must say but then sewing is a bit like that all round don't you think? What darling fairy furniture. I have been assembling bits & pieces for a fairy garden small rocks & shells & the such like. We have wonderful moss just now with all the rain..moss is so lovely isn't it..like fairy velvet really. I wish you could sing me The fairy's wash day! I would so like to hear it. Much love dear keeper of the innocence. Gathering Katie x0x0x

Such cute mushrooms! I think I would like some lemon fairy cake, please. Does that come in a Leslie sized helping or do I have to settle for a fairy sized piece?

I do love fairies. The other day one of my friends told me they met someone who quite solemnly told her they used to be a fairy in a past life. After I finished laughing I wished it were true because I really can't think of anything better than having a fairy or two at the bottom of the garden. I loved reading what you wrote about them x x
