Hearty Wool Hat and a Good Old Cookbook

While I watched "The Holiday" and the republican debate, I worked on this earthy brown hat.  It's the divisible by 4 + 1 pattern of knit 3/purl 1 and when not worked in the round, it's a nice stretchy rib.
On the reading front, I've been revisiting the important books of my life and this is one of them.  Doris Longacre had big vision concerning the way the world eats.  She believed in eating less/using less so the world might have more.  Even when I was a young mother, working with a skinny pocketbook, I respected her "something WAY bigger than us" convictions. Her recipes and ideas pleased me.  She was a true home economist.  Home Economics WAS my favorite subject in high school.  I loved it even more than English.
My favorite recipes (evidenced by all the spatters on the pages) were honey wheat bread and simple granola.  In our simple split level home in Spokane, Washington, I made trays of granola and dense whole wheat bread.  I am so glad this book is still available.
I'm joining Ginny for Yarn Along.  It's fun to click over to all of the knitters' links and see what they are producing and pondering this December.

I love how different your two knitting TV programmes were. I'm still feeling a little sour about ribbing myself though! You look like a pro. The sentiments of that cook book are wonderful and your two favourite recipes sound yummy. Have a beautiful week. Tania ~hedgerowharvest~

I think I still have that cookbook too! :) I thought the same thing and did try and cook that way too. That is cute. I love your knitting. I always enjoy seeing what you are working on. Is it still snowing?
We just have frost, but I pretend it is snow. I always like to hear about what you are reading and doing.
Have a lovely day.

I enjoyed Home Economics, too. I even majored in Home Ec in College!
I need to pull out some of my favorites from years gone by. Have a wonderful week!

I wrote about wool today too, but no knittin' for me. I'm glad you're supporting the woolgrowers by knitting with wool yarn! Thank you.

I've always wanted to look over that More With Less cookbook. I should just get one. I love practical cookbooks like that!

Stay cozy!

That is one of my favourite cookbooks, and still gets used regularly. They were showing 'the holiday' on British TV this week, I missed it this time round. But it is good fun! Advent blessings [my knitting has been neglected as I have been busy decorating and stuff]

I could use a cookbook like that one! Wish I could knit! I can however, join in regarding the movie, "The Holiday". I simply LOVE that movie and even though I've seen it probably ten times...if I find it playing on TV, I watch it again. :)

I used that More-with-Less Cookbook for years. Went to look if I still had it but I think it went when I had a huge purge of my cookbooks a few years back.

I grew up on that book and it was the one cookbook I wanted (and got) for my bridal shower. It's also one (possibly the only one) that went with me to Scotland when we lived there. My favorite recipe is the Roman Apple Cake. I make it gluten free now and sometimes replace sugar with honey. My mom and her friends all seemed to cook from it when I was young. :) Also LOVE the cinnamon roll recipe that makes up to 100 rolls!!!

I have that cookbook, too! I think that's where I got my favorite Honey Whole Wheat bread recipe. :)
God bless your days as you knit and read. Aaahhh. Sounds good!

Doris Longacre sounds like an interesting author. I'll have to see if my library has any of her books.

I love the sheen on that yarn and it will be a beautiful hat.
I'll be looking for that cookbook at the charity shop. They usually have a great variety. I really don't need another cookbook but I'm curious to have a look at it. Maybe the local library has it.

Have a great sleep.
Hugs,
JB

Did you ever make the cheesecake recipe in More With Less? That was our family standard cheesecake, very simple and pretty healthy, and the only recipe I can remember now. I did pore over that cookbook but maybe I had borrowed it from a friend. You make me want to revisit it, too!

I envy you ladies who are all set up for knitting in the winter. A warm brown cap is a classic.

Nice ribbing and very earthy yarn. Nothing like Knitting in the winter and revisiting favorites that bring back good time memories. Oddly enough, I haven't heard of this cookbook, but I think it would fit much of today's healthy eating ideas. Stay warm, calm and knit on, my friend.

I do love the Holiday- though really I think it's the English home styling and snow that attracts me most! Interesting that Angela has the book- I must see if I can find it. Recently we have been talking about the impact of the size of meat farming needed to fuel our Western appetites. Jo thinks we should should a meat-free day and a fish day. Prince Charming not so keen!

Isn't it sad that Home Ec has been removed from the school curriculum? I always enjoyed Martha Stewart because she brought grace, style, and pride back to home keeping/making. And I do believe that our mammas knew how feed their children, unlike so many moms this year. Wish I could knit.

Love that cookbook! I think it was the first one I ever bought for myself, in college. I had college friends who were very back-to-Earthy and loved natural foods. That's a go-to book. Your hat looks lovely and warm :)
