Life Freebies

Apple crisp or apple crumble?  My "crisp" did not turn out the way I wanted it to.  I added too much sugar and simply dumped other stuff in the dish.  Do you know that if you bake often, your results are better?  It's a knack you can definitely lose.  As a young bride, I baked a lot.  My chocolate chip cookies were beautiful and so tasty that I often started out my "dieting" day with a handful of them (and then felt extremely guilt-ridden for the rest of the day and tried to extinguish the guilt with more cookies).  I made brownies with Baker's chocolate, stirring the thick brown batter over the stove.  I baked pretty sugar cookies, all shapes.  I have lost my skill due to lack of practice.  I might make a little plan to get my baking groove back. Any suggestions?
Blue Bunny is a very nice name for a very nice "necessity" and a scoop or two greatly improves floppy bowls of crisp.

My pretty bike, Sunshine, is upside down, hung on the hooks for the winter. SADNESS!  In her place is THE BIG RED SNOW BLOWER.  Bill is thinking winter.  He's so thoughtful.  He has already put up our Christmas lights because he'll be recovering from his surgery during the holiday season.  Jeff will come over and man the snow blower, if need be.  I am afraid of the snow blower.  I need to give her a soft name and try to tame her.  Do you have any good ideas for a name for a big red machine?
No need for her services yet.  Look at the trees!  The fall is proving GORGEOUS here in Colorado.  Bill comes home from Taiwan, Singapore, and Cambodia today.  I've been sleeping with the bedroom window WIDE open and I have been hearing the nice neighborhood night sounds.  Dogs are barking, car doors are shutting, nearby intersections host night-owl drivers and I hear that hum.  I have been choosing to listen to James Taylor's Christmas album as I fall asleep.  I feel cherished by my BIG God and I'm experiencing moment by moment contentment.  All is well.

Today, I shall bring donuts to my morning class.  We're going to watch the episode of I Love Lucy called "Job Switching" and they are going to identify the elements of plot.  This is the episode in which Ethel and Lucy get jobs at the chocolate factory.  It's hilarious.  The kids always say, "Aw!  Is this in black and white?" Then, they begin falling in love with the darling 1950's scenes and they laugh at Lucy's antics.  It's precious.  They will be slightly squirrelly due to their week long break from school which starts this afternoon!  Yay!  They need it.
When we get back from Maui, I shall savor being home for a week with my sweet Bill.  I love our house and our quiet ways.  See what I mean?  Life's freebies are food for the soul.

What a great teacher you are...talking, explaining, laughing and donuts to boot.

My recent apple sweet bread did not turn out very well, but with ice cream, all was well.

How about Big Red for the name of the snowblower? Did I win a prize?

What a lovely post, Pom! I wish I knew a good name for your snow blower, but only "Frosty" comes to mind at the moment, and that's not too original, is it? How about "Ed"? No reason, just who would expect it?

What beautiful Autumn colours. The leaves here are beginning to change colour, but nothing as striking as yours.

Apple crisp can't be crispy if you mix in the oats/butter/sugar mixture (is that what you did?); it has to stay on the top. One thing I see you've been figuring out lately is that in baked items, too much sugar spoils them. You want as little sugar as possible so that the other flavors like butter and spices can shine. The vast majority of dessert recipes out there can be improved by applying this principle. Happy baking, dear Pom!

Think I'll try your approach with my fall-apart meat loaf. "Meat crumble" with a dollop of mashed potatoes on top? Maybe it only works with fruit and whipped cream.

First thought on the snow blower name: The Big Red Killing Machine. Maybe not soft enough?

Second thought: Clifford (the lovable Big Red Dog).

Happy times. Wonderful post.

Lovely post. Could almost smell the apple crisp!

I'd name the snow blower Scarlet. Then, rather than being afraid of the snow blower, you could just "think about it tomorrow." ;)

'Life freebies' is an absolutely super concept and one I intend to remember and dwell on - thank you! I spotted it on my blog reader even before I got over here and then I saw your truly wonderful header! I've just been writing on Lola Nova's blog about Laura Ingalls Wilder (did you see her comment on my post about settlers' garbage - wow!!!) Have a wonderful holiday period. About baking - why not have a cookie exchange before Christmas? That's another one of my favourite American traditions, and I keep thinking I should try another one here, but work gets in the way...

You remind me that I need to bake up one of these soon. Yum!

I love 'I Love Lucy' - such a classic and so funny! The episode of stomping the grapes is one of the most memorable for me.

Maui - wow, have a fantastic time! One of the most beautiful places on earth. Aloha!

Loved reading all your news. Beautiful photos of the trees. What about Snowy or Rosie for the blower? Nice and soft names and not scary! Xx

I think 'Ruby'is a good name for anything red!Do you have 'apple crumble' there? You make it by mixing flour (any kind you like and enough to cover the top of your apples in an oven dish)and butter or margarine into breadcrumbs, like when you're making pastry but leave them as breadcrumbs, don't knead them into dough! then add some sugar (any kind you like) and sprinkle the whole lot over your apples (I stew mine slightly in apple juice to soften them and add some cinnamon before I put them into the oven dish)then bake until golden brown on top.You can also crumb some wholemeal biscuits(we call them digestives here)and add them to the mix if you like.
Enjoy Maui (is that in Hawaii?),pardon my geographic ignorance!xx

I miss teaching! What a nice, homey post you have here. I don't bake much anymore either. Don't need the extra calories and you do tend to forget the little things that make the dish turn out extra good. Maui must be wonderful in the fall. And yes, Colorado fall colors this year of glorious.

I was going to suggest ice cream for that apple crisp...nothing much can't be fixed by adding ice cream. I don't have a snow blower, I use the John Deere -grin-.

hhhmmmm . . . getting your baking groove back . . . sounds like you need to bake something once a week. maybe make it a sunday treat/tradition.
when my wonderful daughter was little (pre-school) we would get out a chair for her to stand on and she would help bake something every sunday. she loved measuring ingredients in and stirring and tasting. such a SWEET memory. i treasure it.
i was hesitating to get back into the bread making routine this fall but realize it's a soothing baking ritual that i truly enjoy once i've started back up with it. i stop in the summer due to it being too hot to run the oven but maybe i shouldn't . . .

I love that episode of Lucy - is that the one where they work the conveyor belt? Oh my! I can only watch SO much of her, b/c eventually the humor drives me CRAZY. What a good idea to get them to identify plot; that scene dominates so much with the humor, and the characterization, that it's easy to overlook the plot. Have a lovely vacation!!
