Apple Love

Hello, Sunshine! We're getting ready to drive north to see our pastor son and his family.  Our Jenny is feeling some suspicious contractions and may be closer to delivery than we thought. Last night we had Kelli's family over and watched the girls romp around in the grass, kicking the ball with their daddy.
Our house guests have come, gone, and will come again this week and I have parent/teacher conferences, too.
September provides such a lovely background scene, doesn't she?  Look at the face below!
The leaves are still green!  There are a few turning just now.  Don't forget to press a few in the pages of your fat books.

In Martha Stewart Living this month you can find a fascinating article about a man from Maine who preserves heirloom apples.  I haven't read it all yet, but don't you LOVE the idea of finding a few not-so-common varieties at your market?  My grandpa grew Transparent apples.  YUM!  They made wonderful pie.  He also grew Wolf River apples and they were huge!  I took some to school for Show and Tell.  Gravenstein  apples are VERY tasty and he grew those, too.  Washington is an apple state and when we lived in Spokane, we took the children to Green Bluff, a little farm haven off the beaten path. I have photographs of my pregnant self helping the kids pick boxes of apples.  So, I deem this season "Apple Weeks" and I am going to eat many apples, make a pie or two, drink apple cider and take photographs of apple beauty.  Would you like to join me?
By the way, no Honey Crisp apples in the produce section yet!  SOON, I hope!
Bye bye, Apple Cheeks!

I do love this time of year and seeing all of the apples in the store. I do have such a craving for apple pies and bars and just eating one for the fun of it. My favorite way would be sitting in a tree with a book, but my kids would really think I had gone around the bend if I did that. It sounds nice though doesn't it.
You will also be getting a fall baby soon, how nice. Isn't this the best time of life?
Have a wonderful week my friend, as always I enjoy your posts because they remind me of what is important in this life.

I love apple time. There are two apple trees behind my daughter's house and one apple was so close to the fence, I really wanted to pick it and eat it, but I resisted. (Eve here) If the neighbor lady would just come out of her house, I'd ask her if I might pick a few. Oh, but they look good and tempting. Very tempting, especially when I see so many fallen on the ground and rotten.

Wishing Jenny a healthy, happy delivery and birth.

Apples are such a happy, sturdy fruit. The smack of adventure to me -- put an apple in your pocket, and take off for the afternoon on a long walk :)
My grandparents had a big old brick home on a steep hillside in West Virginia. In the backyard, on the slope, were two Transparent apple trees. The hillside was always slick with rotting apples in the fall, in spite of all we ate and cooked. I remember slipping down the hill on the skins. The bees were thick there. The grass in on the shady hill was bright green and very soft, and had a vibrant aroma that always reminds me of childhood in West Virginia.

Hope all goes well with the newest addition. So exciting. I've known about heirloom tomatoes but I've never really given thought to heirloom fruits that are different from what we eat today. It is kinda strange isn't it? I will have to check out the apple heirlooms. I'm sure glad there are people who think of this stuff.

A new grandbaby, how exciting! I know because my daughter just presented me with my first grandchild on Sept 8. It was love at first sight for this new granny when she met little Hannah Joy.

Be safe and have a great trip!

I made an apple cake yesterday for my husband's birthday. While eating it at his family party, the conversation turned to the various apples we had all tried in recent years. I think someone mentioned a "Jazz" apple which I had never heard of. We have grown fond of the Pink Lady variety. Kind of sweet and tart.
Have a good trip. How exciting to have a grandchild on the way.

Tom Brown in NC does the same; he's fascinating and has saved many heirloom varieties. As MS would say, "it's a good thing".

Hoping, praying that all goes well with the delivery of the baby.

You remind me that I need to cut some of my cosmos for drying. Now there is another post idea..flowers now, fresh, and those from last year, dried and pressed.

Have a stressless week.

Nancy

Hope it's a happy and safe delivery! I love the apples of fall, and am even thinking of making caramel apples this year, since I'm pretty sure my boys have never had one. I'm sure caramels apples are to blame for much of my time in the dentist's chair (which is probably why my boys have never had one).

Lovely pictures. Your apples make me crave apple pie and honey crisps are my husband's favorite. The only problem is they can sell for up to $3 a piece where we are at. But oh so worth it!

Thank you for calling in! I think we all love apples and now I know you won't mind a little apple obsession here at my place!

Apple dumplings!! You must make apple dumplings too. Their sauce is so rich and sweet that I only make them once a year. It's our hooray it's autumn treat!

I don't believe I've ever had a Honey Crisp apple.

Blessings!
Deborah
