Grandma Moses and More

One of my favorite artists is Grandma Moses and as I presented a list of research topics for my students (they are embarking on a multigenre research project) I had placed Grandma Moses on the list. Guess what? One of my students is related to her! Amazing!
My mother introduced me to these homey small town scenes. My sisters adore them, too.

Kari of Writing Up a Storm often features illustrations and paintings. Do you read her blog? I find myself so drawn to the story tellers. She tends to her readers, so I hope I am not overwhelming her with more than she can handle, but it is a nurturing treat to connect with Kari. I have a feeling that all of you love art as well as the spirit of creating and that's why I like to share my finds with you.

Rembrandt
Philosopher in Meditation
1632
Oil on wood

Musée du Louvre, Paris

I have a gadget on my home page that gives me a piece of artwork to look at every day. They are all astounding, but this one especially captured me. I hope you have a few moments to sit and ponder today. I'll stoke the fire for you.

I've always loved Grandma Moses's art. Her story is quite an amazing part of Art History. How fun that a student is related to her. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers today. Knowing you are there is such comfort for me. Thank-you!

I have never heard of Grandma Moses but am interested and, yes, I do like to see selective art although I am totally uneducated about it despite having artists in both grandparents, the only artists I like/know of are monet and constable so anything you throw at me I will absorb! thankyou.

I have liked Grandma Moses for a long time. The kids and I studied her for "art" once and we had fun looking at all her pictures.

I like the Rembrandt too. I've never seen that one. The staircase is so amazing!

Hello, PomPom,
I remember as a young girl first hearing about Grandma Moses. I love the simplicity and yet vivid details of her work. I used to teach a Talented and Gifted class, and one unit of study was famous artists. I loved teaching this unit. I probably learned much more than the children. Have a lovely day, my friend! Vicki

Oh, thank you for your kind words! And I love Grandma Moses, too, and especially the story of her life. How wonderful for your class to have someone related to her among their midst. And I love that "philosopher in meditation" ~ I spend many an hour sitting and thinking and wondering myself! Pom Pom, you stoke the fires every time you write a post, and brighten the day, and warm the heart!! xo Kari

I had never heard of Grandma Moses before reading this post, and I am so pleased that you have introduced us to her, I love her work, very homely, just up my street.
If you like homely art work, check out Helen Allingham, her paintings are gorgeous, and remind me so much of Lark Rise. I'll post this link and hope that it works, if not, type in google the Helen Allingham Society, and you will see her gorgeosu work. :) xxxx

Hey Pom Pom,

I've just started An Altar in the World, but as soon as I'm finished, we'll talk. The Rembrandt is magnificent. His use of light and dark is amazing. Quite different from Grandma Moses, but I love them both.

When my children (years ago) created a mess I would remonstrate with, "Ish kabibble!" Years later I read a biography of Grandma Moses and she used the exact phrase! I don't know where I came up with it, but it's an interesting mystery!

I love her paintings and just the fact that she began painting in her later years. It's never too late to try something new!

I really love the Rembrandt! I'll have to spend some time gazing at it! Thanks, Pom-Pom!
